Weekly updates on the Arweave Ecosystem

21st February, 2023

The Big News ๐Ÿ’ฅ

More storage, less energy!

Arweave 2.6 incentivization

With the launch of Arweave 2.6 on 10th February, 2023, mining on Arweave becomes more energy-efficient and incentivizes miners to store more data. The fork will activate at block height 1,132,210 - approximately on 6th March, 2023 at 14:00 UTC.

The 2.6 update shifts the primary incentive of miners from having faster drives to storing more of the Arweave dataset by adding a cryptographic speed limit on the number of hashes that can be computed by a miner every second.

Incentivizing the storage of greater portions of the Arweave dataset means that the data replicas stored per unit of energy consumed are maximized. Thus, boosting storage while making the mechanism more energy efficient.

The cryptographic speed limit means that drives will have a โ€œmaximum incentivized speedโ€. This in-turn would help in the more precise estimation for the dynamic price of storing data on Arweave, which has been difficult in the past due to the different drive speeds on the network.

The Highlights ๐Ÿ”ฆ

  • The Permaweb Cookbook, an open source initiative by members of the ecosystem, launched for public use on 11th February, 2023. It is a curated collection of explanations on core concepts, developer guides and starter kits, among other resources. The perfect document for anyone to get started on Arweave or come back for reference! ๐Ÿš€
    Check out their website.

  • The Stamp Protocol widget seen on permapages received an update. Apart from a slick retro looking facelift, few features were added to v0.2 as well. Namely, total stamps, vouched stamps, super stamps and origin views. Super Stamps enable the stamper to share some of their $STAMP tokens with the creator of the content. View this tweet for more information. โซ
This upgrade will soon be released for everyone to use. Stay tuned.

  • Members of the ecosystem are progressing on defining and achieving consensus what โ€œAtomicโ€ means with reference to anything within the ecosystem and creating a standard for the same. It is important to have standards that serve as foundations that facilitate future building. ๐Ÿ“„

  • Bundlr network successfully hit 50K transactions per second and live streamed it. However, this impressive feat isn't the end, Bundlr claims to be designed for scalability beyond this and can handle way more transactions per second. โšก๏ธ

  • Arconnect, one of the popular browser based wallets on Arweave celebrated its 2nd birthday on 14th February 2023. ๐ŸŽ‰

Learning Resources ๐Ÿ“–

Build a decentralised database ๐Ÿ“ฆ

Building scalable, fast, decentralized, permanent, and immutable data stores / databases on Arweave has never been easier.

It's fast, cheap (free for <100KB via bundlr) and holds arbitrary amounts of data in state.

Nader Dabit demonstrates 3 simple ways for doing so with the help of weaveDB, warp and EXM in this tweet.

The databases are like a ledger of transactions. The aforementioned protocols evaluate these transactions to calculate and cache the recent state of the data for serving.

Query data on Arweave ๐Ÿ”

Query data on Arweave like a wizard with this tweet thread from rakis that explains how to use GraphQL. This resource lets you choose from a pool of learning mediums:

Why use Serverless Functions ๐Ÿ—ƒ

Despite sharing syntax for logic definition, smart contracts and server less functions on Arweave have their own strengths. EXMโ€™s serverless functions find advantage when data must be rapidly served while maintaining a decentralised result. Here are the key highlights of EXM:

  • Serverless functions add a layer of modularity and can be composed as per various application requirements.
  • Bug fixes and new feature integrations are easier with serverless functions.
  • A cached layer rapidly serves data to applications.
  • Execution Machine leverages a centralised system while guaranteeing a decentralised result.
  • Execution Machine seek to be crypto agnostic.

These features find application in creation of databases, file systems, decentralised social media, oracles, backend as a service, developer tooling, etc.

An Inspirational Quote ๐ŸŒฑ

Itโ€™s about focusing on the humanity of the ecosystem, providing a place for expression, and a place where concepts can go big by building teams and potentially receiving investment.
